New Housing Reform Announced in Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum, along with Martí Batres, general director of the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE), announced this Wednesday in the morning briefing a new reform so that FOVISSSTE recovers, among other things, its powers to build, rehabilitate, and lease housing. The modification to the ISSSTE Law being promoted by the Executive aims to reinstate the powers to the Institute after losing them in 2007 during the presidency of Felipe Calderón.

The proposal outlines, among other measures, the possibility for ISSSTE to contract companies to build housing for state workers. In a brief presentation at the National Palace, Batres Guadarrama highlighted other points, such as the cancellation of debts for beneficiaries who have paid more than double the value of their housing and still have not fully settled the debt, freezing interest to facilitate the payment of loans, and “settlements” in cases of very large debts to ease payments. According to ISSSTE estimates, around 400,000 accredited individuals could benefit.

Sheinbaum emphasized the merits of this reform: “We are going to discount, eliminate debts, it is one of the biggest demands I received during my campaign [...] there is a very important reform to help all workers who have FOVISSSTE credits.”
