The election of judges, magistrates, and ministers is progressing, but a controversy has recently arisen: contradictory orders have confused the process. The Electoral Tribunal ordered to continue, while the judges commanded to stop it. In response, the Evaluation Committee of the Judiciary decided that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation must resolve whom to obey, whether the Tribunal or the judges.
Supreme Court Minister Javier Laynez Potisek explained in a radio interview that the Court is empowered to make such decisions. According to him, the Court has the capacity to intervene in disputes between branches of the Judiciary. Laynez Potisek pointed out that the complexity of the problem is due to the initiation of the election without the necessary secondary provisions, generating discussions about what to do with the judges.
The National Electoral Institute (INE) has approved a catalog of infractions for the judicial election of 2025, aimed at ensuring clarity and legal certainty in the process. Among the prohibitions for candidates are the hiring of airtime on radio and television, conducting early campaign activities, and spreading defamatory propaganda. There are also restrictions on the participation of members of political parties as observers in the judicial election.
A mailbox has been created for candidates, through which they will receive personal notifications of agreements and resolutions issued by the Technical Unit of Electoral Controversies and the Commission of Complaints and Denunciations of the INE. Additionally, the Electoral Day Information System was approved to report the installation of polling stations between 88 and 90% by 12:00 noon on election day.
In an interview with El Financiero, Andrés García Repper, president of the Legislative Evaluation Committee, reported that attendance at interviews with candidates for the judicial election has been 99%. On the other hand, the interview stage is not yet over due to difficulties in attendance by some candidates from other states. The committee will begin defining the details of the draw that will make up the third stage of the judicial election next Sunday, January 26.
