Mexico Embraces Repatriated Citizens Amid Deportation Tensions

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE) assured that it will always accept the arrival of Mexicans to the country, even in repatriations, after reports that landing was denied to a U.S. military plane with deportees on board. In response, the foreign ministry published a message reaffirming that Mexico welcomes its citizens with open arms in all situations, including repatriations.

The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Mexico maintains a good relationship with the U.S. government and cooperates on various issues, including immigration, while respecting the sovereignty of both nations. This statement comes after NBC News reported that a plane bound for Mexico did not take off, although a White House official mentioned it was an administrative problem that was quickly resolved.

Since the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, relations with Mexico have been tense, primarily due to threats to impose tariffs as a result of the border crisis. The White House announced the start of migrant deportations as part of Trump's campaign promise for mass expulsions.

Despite rumors about rewards for information on migrants to deport, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement clarified that they are not bribing anyone for this information. Deportation flights from the U.S. are not new and have been a common practice, even during the Biden Administration. According to the Department of Homeland Security, over 860 repatriation flights occurred from June to December of last year.

The Pentagon announced that it began using military planes for these deportation flights instead of civilian aircraft, and plans to deport thousands of people under the custody of the Customs and Border Protection agency. These events occur after the presentation of 'Mexico Embraces You', a government strategy to reintegrate Mexicans deported by Trump by offering them employment, social assistance, and a card with a cash amount.
