Xadeni Méndez Márquez, former director of International Affairs of the National Migration Institute (INM), has assumed the direction of the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar), a position that was vacant for three months. The appointment of Méndez Márquez was communicated to the area coordinators of Comar last Wednesday, as well as to some international organizations.
Her arrival at Comar has been met with a certain degree of saturation in the offices of the institution. The now head, Xadeni Méndez, is considered a profile of total trust for the commissioner of INM, Francisco Garduño Yáñez, who was appointed to the position by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The relationship between Garduño Yáñez and Tom Homan's team, designated by Trump as "border czar," has been highlighted, as the latter's policy is more critical against migrants and seeks to displace them from central Mexico to Chiapas.
Despite Francisco Garduño facing a process against him for the fire at the migration station in Ciudad Juárez, a federal judge granted a conditional suspension, allowing him to remain in his position and promote profiles like that of Xadeni Méndez. Although her appointment has not been publicly formalized, her assumption of leadership at Comar occurs in a context of migration crisis stemming from the suspension of the CBP One system to apply for asylum in the United States and the subsequent deportation of thousands of foreigners to Mexico.
