Debate on Abortion Decriminalization in Mexico

In Mexico City, there is an ongoing debate about the decriminalization of abortion, and new legal pathways are being proposed from human rights perspectives. The president of the Commission of Administration and Justice Procurement, Guillermo Vega Guerrero, mentioned that the experiences of other entities where progress has already been made on this issue will be taken into account.

Two legislative initiatives related to the decriminalization of abortion have been presented in the local legislature. One seeks to amend the Penal Code, while the other proposes making it mandatory for the health system to offer this service for free. It is expected that working groups will soon begin in the local Congress to review these proposals.

These working groups will include the participation of collectives, activists, authorities, and representatives from relevant organizations, such as the health sector and the Superior Court of Justice. Not only will the decriminalization itself and the criteria of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation be analyzed, but also the subsequent implications of this measure and the responsibility of the state.

Guillermo Vega Guerrero emphasized that it is necessary to address this matter, and that the working groups will soon be initiated to discuss the decriminalization of abortion in Mexico City.
