Claudia Sheinbaum Announces Electoral Reform Proposal

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced a proposal for electoral reform that will be presented in February. The main objective of the initiative is the elimination of reelection for positions of popular election and the eradication of nepotism in politics, prohibiting direct relatives of leaders from being candidates during their tenure.

In addition to these points, the reform proposal also suggests the elimination of plurinominal legislators and a reduction in public funding for political parties. This measure has generated mixed opinions within the '4T' movement, as mentioned by Ricardo Monreal, leader of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies.

He expressed that some members of the PT and PVEM have already voiced their discontent with the proposal. However, Monreal pointed out that it is necessary to study the initiative carefully and discuss it before reaching definitive conclusions.

In response, the coordinator of the PT deputies, Reginaldo Sandoval, believes that an electoral reform should not affect popular representation in the Legislative Power and that efforts should be made to increase it rather than decrease it. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining representation for minorities through plurinominal legislators.

Regarding public funding for parties, Sandoval stressed the need to design an equitable formula that guarantees a fair distribution of resources, suggesting that 70% should be equal for all parties and 30% proportional.

On the other hand, the coordinator of the PVEM in the Chamber of Deputies, Carlos Puente, pointed out that his party has not yet defined a position on the matter, as the reform initiative has not been formally presented. For his part, Ricardo Monreal assured that the Morena parliamentary group will support the decision made by President Sheinbaum on this issue.
