President Claudia Sheinbaum called on migrants in the country this Tuesday not to fall for tricks from traffickers who promise to transport them to the United States due to the closure of asylum applications by the government of Donald Trump. In a morning conference, the Mexican leader reacted to reports revealing that traffickers charge up to four thousand dollars to migrants with the promise of facilitating their entry to the U.S. amid the uncertainty generated by the immigration policies of the Trump administration.
In her statements, Sheinbaum recalled that one of Trump’s first actions was to close the 'CBP One' application to request asylum from Mexico, which has left migrants in a vulnerable situation and exposed to scams by unscrupulous traffickers. The president warned migrants to stay alert and not to fall for the tricks of people looking to profit at the expense of their desperation.
Additionally, Sheinbaum highlighted that there are ongoing investigations, investigation files, and even arrest warrants against some leaders dedicated to human trafficking, demonstrating that measures are being taken to address this problem. Despite a 75% decrease in the daily apprehension of migrants at the U.S. border since December 2023, the number of irregular migrants in Mexican territory has increased by 132% year-on-year from January to August 2024, reaching a record of over 925 thousand detected individuals.
