The senators of Morena, Adán Augusto López Hernández and Gerardo Fernández Noroña, harshly criticized the former members of the Judicial Evaluation Committee, who submitted their resignation on January 27. According to López Hernández, this resignation was not legitimate, as the members were following instructions from some ministers or from the president of the Court, Norma Piña.
Additionally, the lack of productivity of the committee was questioned, alleging that they breached their duties by continuing the process to select candidates despite a judicial suspension. Gerardo Fernández Noroña joined the criticisms, stating that the resigning members continued to receive a salary without performing their functions.
Among the members who resigned from the committee are Wilfrido Castañón León, Mónica González Contró, Emma Meza Fonseca, Hortencia María Emilia Molina de la Puente, and Luis Enrique Pereda Trejo. This decision was made following the ruling of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation, which ordered the Senate to withdraw candidates from the Judiciary through a lottery.
Fernández Noroña expressed that the Judiciary selected a limited number of candidates for ministers and suggested that the final decision rests with the people through their vote. Furthermore, the possibility of the Senate sanctioning the specialists who resigned was dismissed, despite considering that they may have incurred legal responsibilities.
In addition, the suitability of some candidate profiles for ministers was questioned, highlighting connections with Genaro García Luna, a former Secretary of Security currently imprisoned in the United States for drug trafficking connections. The Senate is expected to respond promptly to the TEPJF ruling and request the complete list of candidates that will participate in the lottery, including those who challenged the first stage organized by the Judiciary Committee. The date for conducting the lottery is scheduled for Friday, January 31, although it could be moved forward to ensure compliance with the deadlines established in the ruling.
