Mexico's Sheinbaum Comments on CELAC Meeting

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expects to receive more details about the dialogues prior to the emergency meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), scheduled for January 30 at the request of Xiomara Castro, pro tempore president of CELAC and president of Honduras. Sheinbaum did not rule out the participation of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, in the meeting.

In her morning press conference, the Mexican leader stated that the Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) continues to operate normally despite the intensification of the anti-immigration campaign by the Trump administration, reflected in recent repatriation flights to several Latin American countries. Sheinbaum expressed solidarity and coordination with all governments in Latin America.

Sheinbaum announced that she will not participate in person in the CELAC meeting convened in response to the immigration policies promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump. Regarding this, she noted: "We are reviewing it, COMAR is operating as it has normally operated, and in any case, if we require a special program, we have to analyze it." Previously, the Mexican leader had downplayed the possibility of a significant increase in the number of Mexicans deported from the United States.
