Judicial Reform Crisis in Mexico: Selection Process Suspended

The Mexican Senate takes over the judicial candidate selection process as the Federal Judiciary Committee resigns amidst political turmoil and ongoing judicial reforms.

Judicial Reform Crisis in Mexico: Selection Process Suspended

An important decision has been made in Mexico regarding the selection of candidates for the Federal Judiciary. It has been determined that this responsibility now falls to the Senate, relegating the Federal Judiciary Committee and eliminating the Federal Judiciary's ability to propose its own candidates.

Critical voices within the Federal Judiciary have been constant since past times, particularly in opposition to the judicial reform initiative proposed during AMLO's term. Despite originally being critical, the Federal Judiciary ended up giving up its influence in the process of reconfiguring Mexican justice, which generated strong criticism both internally and externally.

Compliance with the judicial reform was not only a legal mandate and a state obligation but also a political and legal opportunity. Despite this, the Federal Judiciary Evaluation Committee became embroiled in recent controversies.

Faced with the order to resume the selection of candidates within 24 hours, the Committee did not comply and requested the intervention of the Supreme Court, which has caused a paralysis in the process. In an act of protest, the Committee members resigned from their positions, considering the task constitutionally assigned unfeasible.

This year, the first judicial elections in the history of the country will be held, after facing resistance from the Federal Judiciary, which attempted to invalidate the judicial reform through strikes and abuse of powers.

Despite the initial suspension that prevented the participation of candidates in the process, the Electoral Tribunal determined that acts within an electoral process should not be suspended, thus allowing candidates to continue in the race.

The candidate selection process is reaching its final stage, with deadlines established for the publication of lists, the vetting of candidates, and the approval of names. Despite the difficulties, it is expected that citizens will be able to choose the best candidates for the Federal Judiciary in Mexico.
