Corruption Allegations Against INAI in Mexico

The president Claudia Sheinbaum addressed in her morning conference this Thursday the controversy that has arisen in national media regarding corruption accusations directed at the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information, and Protection of Personal Data (INAI). It has been reported that INAI allegedly requested tickets from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) for the FIFA World Cup that will take place in Mexico, the United States, and Canada in 2026.

Sheinbaum Pardo described this case as one of many episodes of corruption at the Institute, which according to her, have led to its imminent disappearance, a fact that she celebrated again. "We are going to carry out the investigation, it is not just a headline," the official stated.

In another context, Norma Julieta Del Río Venegas, a commissioner of INAI, confirmed on the program "Aristegui en Vivo" the visit of Iñigo Riestra, lawyer and general secretary of the FMF, to the office of the Internal Control Body (OIC) of the Institute last Monday to file a complaint for extortion allegedly carried out by officials of the agency. This action was triggered after a fine of nearly 23 million pesos was imposed on the FMF due to irregularities in the implementation of the Fan ID in the stadiums.

Del Río Venegas, who in December 2023 reported questionable practices by INAI employees to the Superior Audit Office of the Federation (ASF), and whose vote against imposing the sanction on the FMF will be issued on Wednesday in the plenary session of the agency, since she believes that they have corrected the noted deficiencies, informed that the INAI Data Secretariat is preparing three more procedures against the governing body of national football following the ongoing amparo trial.
