The president of the National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico, Guadalupe Taddei, announced that 84,000 polling places will be set up for the judicial election on June 1, after receiving an increase of 800 million pesos in its budget. The resources will be released by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) as Taddei informed the media.
In statements to the press, Taddei mentioned that the procedure is ready in the Treasury and that the necessary structure is already being generated by the provisions of that entity. She explained that with the additional budget, 84,000 sectional polling places can be installed for the judicial election.
The INE plans to print more than 600 million electoral ballots for the six elections of the Judicial Power, which include the appointment of ministers, magistrates, and judges. The request for budget expansion was initially 1.511 billion pesos, and so far an increase of 800 million pesos has been confirmed.
On the other hand, on January 15, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, urged the INE to define the rules for the first popular election of the Judicial Power scheduled for June 1 as soon as possible. Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of establishing clear rules for the judicial election, as she considers it relevant to define whether any political party can call for participation for a candidate or simulate their participation through a civil association.
This year, Mexico is preparing to hold its first popular election for judges, magistrates, the Supreme Court, the Electoral Tribunal, and the new Judicial Disciplinary Court, following the enactment of the constitutional reform to the Judicial Power in September 2024.
