Nuevo León Strengthens Security at the Border

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the deployment of 10,000 members of the National Guard to the border of Nuevo León to combat fentanyl trafficking, in an agreement with Donald Trump.

Nuevo León Strengthens Security at the Border

The growth of the state is partly due to the T-MEC, according to García, governor of Nuevo León. The presidency sent 10,000 members of the National Guard to the northern border, which will benefit Nuevo León, García clarified, pointing out that these are additional police officers who were previously distributed throughout the country and will now be allocated to the border.

Less than 24 hours after President Claudia Sheinbaum committed to President Trump to send military personnel to the border to combat fentanyl trafficking, members of the National Guard will arrive in Colombia, Nuevo León, as part of the Northern Border Operation, which consists of 10,000 members of the National Guard and the Army.

On February 3, 2025, according to agreements between Mexico and the United States regarding security and trade, the Secretariat of National Defense made preparations for the deployment of personnel.

A C-130 Hercules aircraft and a C27J Spartan from the Mexican Air Force departed from Felipe Ángeles International Airport to transport 990 National Guard agents to cities like Tijuana, Sonoyta, and Matamoros. Additionally, 6,310 National Guard agents were deployed by land to various locations at the northern border.

Sheinbaum held a conversation with Trump about the tariffs that the United States intends to impose on Mexican products. In turn, she requested to halt this charge for at least one month. As a result, Mexico will send 10,000 military personnel to strengthen the northern border and combat drug trafficking to the United States, especially fentanyl.

The governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, expressed his happiness for the decision, considering it beneficial for the region. He emphasized the importance of President Sheinbaum's announcement and highlighted the need to unite in critical moments rather than seeking political gains.
