Claudia Sheinbaum Rejects Prohibition of Tumbados Corridos

The president of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her opposition to the prohibition of corridos tumbados, a position recently adopted by the Government of Nayarit when they published a decree banning the interpretation and public reproduction of music that glorifies crime. During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum stated: 'I do not agree with prohibition; I agree with raising awareness, with education, with opening new forms of corridos tumbados that have nothing to do with glorifying violence, drugs, or discrimination against women.'

The decree enacted in Nayarit prohibits the reproduction of various types of corridos, such as narcocorridos and war corridos, that promote the glorification of crime and violence at public events. The state's Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection is authorized to carry out inspection operations at these events to ensure compliance with the regulations and apply the corresponding sanctions in case of non-compliance, which can include temporary or permanent suspension of the event and revocation of the venue's operating permits.

Sheinbaum mentioned the difficulty of prohibiting this type of music and highlighted the initiative from Durango to organize a Mexican music festival that would include corridos tumbados, but with lyrics that promote values such as love, peace, happiness, and heartbreak, without glorifying violence. In that sense, she indicated: 'Everything we want from Mexican music, but without glorifying violence.'

Amid the exponential growth in the popularity of corridos tumbados, various politicians from different states in the country have attempted to ban concerts of this genre. Even former President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, created a list of musical hits to show that there are Mexican artists who do not promote a luxurious lifestyle filled with excesses and violence.
