The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, presented on February 5 reforms to prohibit "reelection" and "nepotism" in positions of popular election. The document submitted to the Chamber of Deputies highlights an omission. The reform against reelection is in honor of the Constitution of 1917 and will establish that there shall be no reelection for any position of popular election, including the presidency of the Republic.
The Congress of the Union received the initiative on Friday, January 7, where it is specified that the Chamber of Senators is responsible for matters of non-reelection and nepotism. It is expected that this initiative and another 72 regulatory laws will be discussed in the next session period of the Congress of the Union.
The submitted document highlights that the prohibition of reelection implies that individuals holding a popular election position cannot be reelected for the immediate subsequent term. On the other hand, it is mentioned that the reform against reelection would not apply until 2030. Regarding nepotism, it is indicated that it would apply in 2027.
In the text of the initiative, the importance of recovering the democratic essence by prohibiting reelection again in the Mexican political system is mentioned. Although the Constitution allows the reelection of certain public positions, this aspect is sought to be corrected.
