Paco Ignacio Taibo II, director of the Fondo de Cultura Económica and a prominent activist in Mexico, has made an extreme proposal by suggesting the death penalty by firing squad for those Mexicans who express support for the President of the United States, Donald Trump, as part of his strategy to eradicate drug trafficking cartels in the country.
In a rarely seen live interview, Taibo argued that those who support Trump are traitors to the homeland, comparing the situation to a historical episode of executions in Mexico. The activist generated controversy by raising this idea amid the debate on violence and security in the country.
Some reactions have emerged in response to this proposal, questioning whether Taibo speaks on behalf of criminal groups or if he is simply exaggerating due to his position. Despite the death penalty not being provided for in Mexican legislation, the activist has sparked debate about the seriousness of his statements and the impact they could have.
The issue of the death penalty has periodically arisen in Mexico over time, without ever being applied. Even with arguments for and against, the conclusion has remained the same: one cannot resort to an irreversible sanction like death.
Taibo's stance has been strongly criticized and questioned by various sectors of society. A response from the authorities is expected, particularly from President Claudia Sheinbaum, given the seriousness of the remarks made by an official from her administration. However, no measures have been taken in this regard thus far.
