The leader of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde, confirmed that the party will not allow candidacies from direct family members in the municipal elections of Durango and Veracruz. Although the law proposed by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has not yet been approved, Alcalde asserted: "We will adopt it as a principle."
Morena will implement this measure for the municipal elections scheduled for June 1 in Durango and Veracruz, according to Alcalde. Although it is not a law for this electoral process, it will be a principle for selecting candidates, said the former Secretary of the Interior, who is already preparing for the elections in both states.
"In coherence, this is what we will do in the local elections of Durango and Veracruz this year," Alcalde posted on her social media. Despite internal discussions in the 4T, Morena's decision paves the way for the Green Party and the PT, anticipating possible changes in regional politics driven by Sheinbaum.
The measure to prevent family members from succeeding current public office holders is part of the fight against nepotism within Morena and the regional political sphere led by the head of state. Sheinbaum proposes that this law come into effect in 2030, but Morena could implement it internally starting in 2027 to change power structures.
Morena is already working on the electoral strategy for the municipal elections in Durango and Veracruz. There is optimism about advancing in Durango and strengthening the administration of Rocío Nahle in Veracruz, who is the first female governor in the Gulf state. Party members support Sheinbaum's electoral proposals, including the elimination of re-election.
