The capture of Jesús Darío ‘N.’, known as ‘La Cara de Cochi’ and who was the right-hand man of Rafael Caro Quintero, has generated a wave of violence in Caborca. In response to the increase in gunfights and attacks by hitmen against authorities, the government of Claudia Sheinbaum sent 300 members of the National Guard to restore order in the municipality, according to sources consulted by El Financiero.
On January 16, in the early hours, a group of shooters belonging to the Caborca Cartel opened fire on a hotel where state police were staying. Just five hours earlier, agents from the same corporation had been attacked on the Altar-Pitiquito highway, as reported by the Secretary of Public Security (SSP) in Sonora.
During the same early morning, suspected hitmen launched an explosive drone over the city of Caborca, which fortunately did not detonate, triggering a response from the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) to secure the area. Agents from the Criminal Investigation Ministerial Agency (AMIC), who preferred to remain anonymous, reported that the residence of Temo Cañez, the Municipal Police Commander of Caborca, was fired upon.
So far, only four arrests have been confirmed in relation to the various acts of violence recorded. It is noteworthy that authorities have provided little information about the different confrontations, and neither the local municipal police nor Mayor Abraham David Mier Nogales have issued statements on the matter.
The intense security deployment by the three levels of government has placed the municipality on high alert, as after the capture of the main target, the Caborca Cartel has directed its efforts toward police officers, both municipal and state. The population of Caborca has recorded videos from establishments where they are sheltering from the gunfire, as well as other recordings showing soldiers of the Mexican Army patrolling the city at high speed.
