Political leaders in Mexico have expressed mixed opinions about the errors in the lists of candidates for the judicial election. The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal, believes that the errors are surmountable and dismissed the criticisms from the opposition regarding the reform. He highlighted that the majority of those registered in the process belong to the judicial system, which, according to him, strengthens democratic participation.
On the other hand, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the upper house, rejected the idea that the Senate should correct the errors in the lists, arguing that it is not a function of the chamber. Noroña pointed out that in the event of death or declination, the Senate may request substitutions, but cannot intervene in any other way in the lists.
Regarding the National Electoral Institute (INE), it has ordered the publication of the lists and emphasizes that the Senate must correct the errors before the printing of the ballots, scheduled for February 20. Despite the criticisms and alerts about disorder, the INE insists on the need to correct the lists to ensure an adequate electoral process.
Fernández Noroña has mentioned that it would not be the first time ballots are printed with errors and has emphasized that the problem should not discourage participation in the electoral process. In this context, the internal debate within the INE has been questioned by some political leaders, who see the need to correct the errors and ensure transparency in the judicial election process.
