Sheinbaum Defends Mexico's Sovereignty Amid U.S. Comments

President Claudia Sheinbaum assured this Wednesday that she is not afraid of a US invasion to combat drug trafficking, following Donald Trump's statements claiming that Mexico is governed by cartels. Sheinbaum stated: 'I am not afraid; I have a people backing me. So if that decree relates to extraterritorial actions, we do not accept those.'

The leader defended her government's security strategy, highlighting that in January 2025, the lowest number of homicides in the last eight years was recorded. In response to Trump's accusations, Sheinbaum said: 'They want to place us as if we defend drug cartels or organized crime, of course not. But also, President Trump has his own way of expressing himself.'

Trump's comments generated controversy in Mexico, especially considering that CIA drones have been spying on organized crime in Mexican territory. Sheinbaum pledged to safeguard the country's sovereignty: 'I will not allow the sovereignty to be violated, and if it were to be violated, there is a whole people ready to defend their homeland.'

Sheinbaum emphasized that what they defend is sovereignty, not the cartels, highlighting the importance of maintaining certainty and conviction in principles. She recalled her tenure as head of government in Mexico City, where they managed to reduce crime rates by more than 50% through a comprehensive strategy and decreasing impunity.

Amid the tension generated by Trump's statements, Sheinbaum's position is clear and firm in defending Mexican sovereignty against possible external threats.
