Proposed Nicknames for Judges in Mexico's Elections

In a comedic twist, nicknames for judges in Mexico's upcoming judicial election have emerged. The suggestion by Minister Lenia Batres has sparked criticism from former Minister José Ramón Cossío. The INE warns these could be seen as electoral propaganda before the vote on June 1, 2025.

Proposed Nicknames for Judges in Mexico's Elections

On the morning of this Wednesday, a list was disseminated on social media with the alleged nicknames that judges participating in Mexico's first judicial election will seek to appear on the ballot. This initiative was started by Minister Lenia Batres, who proposed to the National Electoral Institute (INE) to appear as the 'Minister of the People'.

Weeks after Batres' proposal, retired Supreme Court Minister José Ramón Cossío shared and criticized these nicknames, stating that 'this comedy will follow the tragedy'.

Although lists with nicknames such as 'The Angel of Justice', 'The Magistrate of Change', 'Judge Memo', 'The Judge of AMLO' and 'The Popular Defender' were sent, the INE proposes that using them could be considered electoral propaganda, making them inadmissible.

These are the alleged lists of nicknames sent to the INE, from which Cossío's publication derives.

The electoral day on which judges, magistrates, and ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation will be elected is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 1, 2025. In addition to federal elections, several other states will also carry out their corresponding processes this same year.
