Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, a member of the Sinaloa Cartel facing the death penalty in the United States, has sent a letter to the Government of Mexico demanding his repatriation. In this letter, Zambada claims that his detention and transfer to US authorities were "irregular and illegal" and argues that the United States lacks the legitimacy to impose the death penalty on him. He warns of possible consequences for the relationship between the two countries if he is not returned to Mexico.
He emphasizes that the American country failed to verify the legality of his entry. According to Zambada, it is the responsibility of Claudia Sheinbaum's administration to demand guarantees that he will not be executed. He warns about the danger of setting a precedent that allows the United States to detain and extradite Mexicans without consent.
The response from the head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, was to confirm the receipt of the letter by the Mexican government at the consulate in New York. She highlighted the importance of analyzing the legality of the detention and the request for repatriation, beyond Zambada's figure and his criminal actions.
Sheinbaum mentioned that the Attorney General, Alejandro Gertz Manero, will provide more details about this case at the next conference on Tuesday. She acknowledged that Zambada is correct in aspects related to Mexican sovereignty and the legal process he would face if he remains in the United States. However, the leader dismissed the idea that the relationship between Mexico and the United States would be affected if 'El Mayo' is not repatriated.
