Tensions Rise as Zambada Seeks Repatriation

The drug trafficker Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada is pressuring the government of Claudia Sheinbaum to be tried in Mexico instead of being extradited. Zambada has threatened to provoke a bilateral crisis if his request is not addressed, claiming that it would be a betrayal of the Mexican legal system not to allow him to be tried in his country.

In this context, Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that she has received Zambada's request. The president stated that the important issue in this petition is the compliance with the Constitution and that it is up to the Prosecutor's Office to address this matter. According to Sheinbaum, the prosecutor already has an open case on this issue and more details will be provided next Tuesday.

Regarding the alleged attempted arrest of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, who allegedly escaped through a tunnel, Sheinbaum does not believe this is connected to Zambada's request. The president emphasized that Zambada's detention was described as irregular and illegal by the drug trafficker's defense in a letter addressed to Mexican authorities.

The context of tensions between Mexico and the United States, especially after the designation of Mexican cartels as terrorists, could influence the decision regarding Zambada. There is a possibility that the drug lord could offer information that benefits Donald Trump's anti-Mexican rhetoric, who has been conducting a purge in agencies like the FBI and DEA, which would be involved in the alleged attempt to arrest Zambada in Texas.
