The former president of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, lamented the cancellation of the construction of the refinery in Atitalaquia, Hidalgo, a project he had initiated during his administration. Calderón explained that the refinery aimed to process or reprocess fuel oil, a pollutant waste from old refineries in Salamanca and Tula. According to the former president, this refinery would have been capable of producing gasoline without generating pollutants.
Calderón stated that the construction of the Atitalaquia refinery began in 2011 and that by 2012, at the end of his term, the basic engineering had been completed and the land had been prepared for construction. However, the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto canceled the project after having only erected a fence around the complex.
The former president expressed his disappointment at this decision and defended the strategic importance of the refinery's location in the center of the country. He criticized the government's current reinsertion of fuel oil in the Tula refinery, pointing out that this has caused environmental problems in Mexico City.
Calderón assured that the Atitalaquia refinery would have been key for the production of high-quality gasoline and criticized the cancellation of the project, predicting that the Dos Bocas refinery, promoted by the current government, will end up costing much more than initially estimated.
