Increasing Violence Against Police in Mexico

This year, in Mexico, at least 70 police officers have been killed, averaging 1.4 fallen agents each day, according to the civil organization Causa en Común. The report 'Killed Police Officers 2025' details that between February 14 and 20 alone, at least 12 police homicides were recorded in six states of the country. Four cases occurred in Jalisco, three cases in Michoacán, two cases in Morelos, and one case each in Colima, Baja California, and Sinaloa.

Causa en Común also documented that from October 1, 2024, when Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency, until February 20, 2025, 164 agents were killed in Mexico. This reflects a worrying outlook for security forces in the country. Of the total, 152 agents were men and 12 women, of which 99 belonged to municipal corporations, 59 to state forces, and 6 to federal forces.

Sinaloa, Michoacán, and Oaxaca stand out as the most dangerous states for police bodies this year, with nine, eight, and seven police murders respectively. They are followed by Morelos and Guanajuato with six each, above the states of Mexico and Jalisco with five murders respectively.

The majority of the victims were from municipal corporations, considered the most vulnerable against organized crime, while the fewest casualties were in federal security forces. According to Causa en Común, of the police officers killed in 2025, 49 were municipal agents, 16 state agents, and 5 federal agents.
