Proposal to Change the Name of Mexico in the Constitution

The Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, Kenia López Rabadán from the National Action Party (PAN), has proposed an initiative to modify the Constitution and change the official name of Mexico from 'United Mexican States' to simply 'Mexico'. She argues that this modification aims to strengthen national identity and simplify official documents by aligning the country's name with its international usage.

In her proposal, López Rabadán highlights that the term 'Mexico', of Nahuatl origin, has a profound meaning linked to the location of Tenochtitlan, which reinforces the sense of cultural belonging. The Deputy clarifies that this name change would not affect the federal system or the form of government of the country, reaffirming that Mexico will continue to be a representative and democratic republic.

The proposal to modify the name of Mexico has been a topic of debate over time, with previous similar proposals presented by legislators and former presidents. López Rabadán emphasizes that various international organizations already use the name 'Mexico', indicating that it is time to reflect this in the Constitution.

In the words of the Deputy: 'Mexican families do not use the current designation, historically they have been referred to as 'Mexican Republic', 'Mexican Nation', and 'Mexican America'. It is time for us to feel represented by the name that truly identifies us: Mexico.'
