Ricardo Anaya, parliamentary coordinator of the PAN senators, criticized the proposal to apply the prohibition of nepotism from the Morena party statute, arguing that the statutes of a political party cannot be above the law or the Constitution. Anaya expressed his disagreement in an interview after the session of the Governance and First Legislative Studies commissions concluded.
In this regard, the PAN requests that in the Chamber of Deputies, the original frequency be adjusted so that the prohibition of nepotism comes into effect in 2027 instead of 2030, as proposed by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. Anaya emphasized that his party will support the reform if the current proposal is withdrawn.
During the vote in the Senate, the PAN bench supported the constitutional reform in general, but not in particular due to a reservation that postponed its application. Anaya mentioned that the postponement of the measure against nepotism is an act of rebellion by the Morena members towards the head of the Executive and reflects weakness by prioritizing group interests over the common good.
Despite the president's invitation to senators and other members not to seek re-election in 2027 for the same position already held by their relatives, some Morenistas and allies like Saúl Monreal, Félix Salgado Macedonio, and Ruth Silva left open the possibility of aspiring to a position if called for by the people.
