Extradition of Drug Lords Signals Major Shift in US-Mexico Relations

The Webb County Sheriff's Office in Texas has revealed the list of drug traffickers extradited to the United States, among whom is Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'Tony Montana' and brother of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho', leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). In addition to him, Erick Valencia Salazar, alias 'El 85', has also been extradited by Mexican authorities to the United States.

'Erick Valencia Salazar, alias 'El 85', was extradited to the United States in February 2020 and in September 2024 was found guilty of conspiracy to traffic cocaine and methamphetamines, as well as illegal use of firearms. The sentencing hearing against Rubén Oseguera González will soon take place in the District Court of Columbia, located in Washington D.C. Cristian Fernando Gutiérrez Ochoa, the son-in-law of 'Tony Montana', is also detained in the United States; he was arrested in November 2024 in Riverside, California, on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

The extradition of 29 drug traffickers by the Mexican government to the United States has been an unprecedented operation in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. This list includes Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, 'El Z-40', and Óscar Omar Treviño Morales, 'El Z-42', leaders of Los Zetas.

Antonio Oseguera Cervantes is one of the high-ranking leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and has been accused of overseeing violent actions, logistics, weapon acquisition, and money laundering operations for the organization. A formal accusation was issued in January 2023 by a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia, charging him with international conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamines with the intent to import them into the United States, as well as possession of firearms in relation to drug trafficking offenses.

Besides 'El Mencho' and Tony 'Montana', other family members and CJNG members detained in the United States include Rubén Oseguera González, alias 'El Menchito', the son of 'El Mencho'; Andrew Clark, alias 'El Dictador', a logistical link between the CJNG and the Pacific Cartel; and Rafael Caro Quintero, known as 'the narcotics trafficker of traffickers', who is identified as one of the main operators in drug trafficking and in the buying and selling of weapons for the organization.

Antonio Oseguera Cervantes's criminal history includes three arrests, the first of which was in 1996 in the United States for heroin distribution. The second occurred in December 2015 in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco, where assault weapons, a handgun, and narcotics were seized. Finally, he was arrested again in December 2022 in a suburb of Guadalajara, being accused of participating in the importation of large quantities of methamphetamines and cocaine into the United States.
