Challenges Faced by President Sheinbaum After Five Months

President Sheinbaum's administration is struggling with economic challenges, security issues, and rising tensions with the U.S. due to trade and migration concerns.

Challenges Faced by President Sheinbaum After Five Months

For the past five months, President Sheinbaum has been facing increasing problems as solutions start to run out. In the Chamber of Deputies, allied legislators from the Morena party are seeking to overturn what the co-legislator approved regarding nepotism reform and non-re-election, trying to revert to the original proposal of 2027 instead of 2030.

On a national and international level, the situation is complicated by various protests, such as the discontent of teachers over double charging of their pensions and Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs if Mexico does not manage to stop migration flows and synthetic drug trafficking. The recent visit by the Mexican delegation to Washington seeks to restore a bilateral agenda that allows for agreements on economic and security matters.

On the other hand, Sheinbaum faces inherited challenges, such as the economic crisis with a significant budget deficit and alarming levels of public insecurity. The collapse of Pemex seems imminent, with declining production, million-dollar debts, and the worst loss in a decade. Despite the approved energy reform, the situation is critical, especially with the cap on gasoline prices.

In these five months of management, Sheinbaum has implemented a change in security strategy by combating drug lords and high-ranking criminals. There has been a decrease in illegal migration, resulting from stricter measures applied. However, the lack of loyal collaborators and the influence of López Obrador in her environment complicate her work, eventually forcing her to distance herself from her mentor to achieve successful management.

As public resources begin to dwindle due to the economic recession and tariffs impact job losses and insecurity, citizens may change their perception of the president. The challenge lies in maintaining the effectiveness of social programs amid an increasingly complicated national and international landscape.
