The president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal, praised President Claudia Sheinbaum for what he called an "act of courage" in extraditing more than 20 drug traffickers to the United States. According to Monreal, the traffickers transferred had already been sentenced in Mexico, but their extradition had been hindered by judicial rulings and constitutional arguments.
Monreal called for support for President Sheinbaum, warning that such measures could trigger violent reactions in the country. "It is an act that must be safeguarded for what it can unleash in our territory by sending such a number of people linked to drug trafficking and violence," he remarked, while insisting that the president needs citizen support given the risks this decision entails.
In a video posted on his social networks, the Morena legislator emphasized that these extraditions represent an extraordinary effort by the current administration and accused the Judiciary of having stalled such actions in the past. Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero denied that this was a formal extradition, and the head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, clarified that the decision to transfer the drug traffickers was made by the Security Cabinet, not by President Sheinbaum.
García Harfuch emphasized that it was a collegial decision, directly distancing the president from the execution of this action. Monreal highlighted that such actions are unprecedented and stated that in the past, the Judiciary had imposed legal obstacles preventing the handover of these criminals to the neighboring country. In his message, Monreal also took the opportunity to highlight the international context that President Sheinbaum faces, marked by hostility from the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States.
The legislator stressed that no other Mexican president had faced such a tense relationship with the U.S. government and called on citizens to rally around the president to strengthen her position against such a complex and undiplomatic neighbor as Trump. Despite the criticism against him, Yunes reiterates that he will remain in Morena.
