Approval of Anti-Nepotism Initiative in Mexico

The Green Party's initiative to ban nepotism in public office was approved in the Mexican Congress on March 3, 2023. Claudiam Sheinbaum's proposal aims for implementation by 2027, fostering democratic renewal.

The Green Party managed to advance its initiative to prohibit nepotism in public positions, which was approved unchanged in the joint commissions of Constitutional Points and Political-Electoral Reform of the Chamber of Deputies on Monday, March 3. For her part, Gabriela Jiménez, the vice-coordinator of the Morena deputies, had previously expressed that they would seek to return to the original reform proposal presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum, instead of maintaining the change proposed by the Green Party to implement the prohibition in 2027 instead of 2030.

In an unexpected turn, during the session of the joint commissions of Constitutional Points and Political-Electoral Reform on Monday, Gabriela Jiménez decided not to pursue changes to the bill approved by the Senate. This change in stance occurred despite Jiménez's previous claims of being in talks with different parliamentary groups to delay the implementation of the nepotism prohibition.

In response, President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed her position regarding the anti-nepotism reform in her press conference on Monday. She emphasized the importance of avoiding personal ambitions over the transformation of the country, reiterating her intention for the prohibition to take effect starting from the midterm elections.

On the other hand, Senator Félix Salgado Macedonio announced on social media his decision not to seek the Morena gubernatorial candidacy in 2027, choosing to wait until 2033. Due to the impossibility of modifying the opinion in the Chamber and the lack of votes in the Senate, political plans had to adapt to the current legislative reality.

In this context, the National Action Party offered its support to Morena to approve the change proposed by the Green Party, even adding a reserve called "the Andy challenge" which seeks to establish a waiting period before direct relatives of the sitting president can run for the Presidency.
