Alito Moreno Warns of Democracy Erosion in Mexico

The global vice president of the Socialist International, Senator Alejandro 'Alito' Moreno, warned of the deterioration of democracy in Mexico due to populism, which has reached to destroy the institutions of the Mexican State. During a meeting of leaders of the Socialist International, an organization led by the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, Moreno stated that since 2018, Mexico is divided and is being led by an autocratic regime.

'In Mexico, we are facing a repressive state, a drug party in power, which seeks, through the political persecution of its opponents, to nullify all criticism. They seek to destroy the party system to install a single-party regime,' commented the senator. He also mentioned that the current Morena government has taken control of the Legislative Power and has orchestrated the destruction of the Judicial Power, as well as of autonomous bodies.

'Our democracy was conquered in 2018 by the populist onslaught that knew how to take advantage of the shortcomings of our young democracy, especially the unresolved poverty, and thus it managed to entrench itself,' expressed Moreno. He also denounced the growing influence of drug trafficking in the government, labeling Mexico as a 'drug government.'

'The overflow that the Mexican state suffers from organized crime is expressed in the control that drug trafficking has over just over 60 percent of the national territory, as well as in the more than 215,000 verified deaths in almost 7 years of Morena's government, and in the thousands of missing and displaced persons,' noted the senator.

Meanwhile, he called for a social pact to revitalize democracy in Mexico, emphasizing the need for dialogue and tolerance. He criticized the 'sentimentality' of calls for national unity by the government, demanding concrete actions to halt institutional destruction, especially judicial reform.
