This Thursday, President Claudia Sheinbaum had a successful phone call with Donald Trump to stop tariffs on products from Mexico. During her morning conference, she insisted on her commitment to renew the 54 consulates in the United States, as she has expressed on previous occasions.
From the National Palace, the instruction has been communicated to carry out a review of more than 50 consuls to implement immediate improvements in the attention of the Mexican consular network. This initiative aims to identify and take measures regarding diplomatic delegations that have been pointed out for mismanagement of resources or for generating complaints among Mexican migrants in hostile territory, such as the case of the U.S.
In particular, it is indicated that the former governors Luis Gutiérrez and Julieta Olivia Muñoz Olmos, who led the agency before Tatiana Clouthier, may have favored certain Mexican investors associated with the PRI and the PAN. In this sense, it is expected that Clouthier, the current secretary of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, will play a crucial role in this restructuring.
Sheinbaum reiterated her commitment to continue working to ensure that consulates function properly and provide respectful treatment to compatriots. She acknowledged that, while some consuls are efficient, others have not shown sensitivity toward the situation of Mexicans abroad.
On the other hand, the head of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad has been asked to coordinate with Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma. The postponement of the tariffs has been confirmed following the communication between Trump and Sheinbaum, indicating that partisan interests are not related to the agenda of Mexicans abroad.
