In the morning conference this Friday, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that next week the ballots to be used in the first judiciary election at the federal level in Mexico will be officially presented. This historic election aims to sever the economic power from justice and guarantee equal access to it.
During the conference, Sheinbaum expressed her support for Minister Lenia Batres Guadarrama, who withdrew from a private session of the Second Chamber of the SCJN after being excluded from a vote related to an amparo from businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego. The minister denounced a violation of the Internal Regulations of the Court and received expressions of solidarity for the offenses she suffered on social media.
Ricardo Salinas Pliego faces an alleged tax debt with the SAT, which is under review in national courts. The confrontation in the SCJN session and the defense of judicial independence have generated controversy.
Sheinbaum emphasized that the judicial reform seeks to eliminate corruption and the influence of economic power on justice. With the Fourth Transformation, Mexico has achieved a separation of economic power from political power, and now the same is sought with the judiciary. The upcoming election of judges, ministers, and magistrates of the SCJN through popular vote represents a significant step towards a more transparent and impartial justice.
