The governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, is already working on the succession that will take place in 2027 in the state. Durazo is trying to ensure that the candidacy of Morena is in the hands of someone from his closest circle, which has generated tensions with the Taddei family, particularly with Jorge Taddei.
Jorge Taddei and his family had supported Durazo upon his arrival to the governorship in 2021, but relations soured as the governor began to hinder the Taddeis' rise to positions of power and responsibility in the state government. One of the critical points was the appointment of Judith Armenta as president of Morena in Sonora, instead of a candidate supported by the Taddei family.
During internal negotiations within Morena, Durazo forced the resignation of Wendy Briceño, close to Jorge Taddei, from her position as Secretary of Development. He also managed to diminish Jorge Taddei's influence in the state, who still seeks to run for governor in 2027 without Durazo's support.
The situation in Sonora points to an electoral contest in 2027 between Alfonso Durazo and Jorge Taddei, who currently hold the Secretary of Development and the local leadership of Morena, respectively. Although Durazo has not chosen a clear successor, it is mentioned that Senator Lorenia Valles Sampedro could be relevant in the list of candidates for the succession.
