The former magistrate and member of the Institute for Democracy and Justice A.C., Salvador Nava Gomar, expressed his disagreement with the statements of public officials regarding the selection of candidates for the Federal Judiciary. Nava Gomar believes that these determinations should be made before the elections, not after, as has happened in this case.
The statement came after the civil group Defensorxs documented 13 candidates with alleged links to organized crime, sexual offenses, and political-religious sects, among other irregularities. Specifically, the case of Silvia Rocío Delgado, former lawyer of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán Loera, and Francisco Herrera Franco, accused of being related to criminals and nicknamed 'the terror prosecutor' during his term as a federal criminal judge in Michoacán, is highlighted.
In this regard, Nava Gomar criticized the Senate's position, arguing that, from his perspective, they are not trying to access power but have already done so and will be on the electoral ballots. He also recalled that the committee of the Federal Judiciary did not complete its work, and the Electoral Tribunal determined that the Senate would be responsible for selecting candidates, without evaluating their suitability.
On the other hand, the statements of Guadalupe Taddei, president of the National Electoral Institute, were addressed, who mentioned that once the results are defined, they will be communicated to the Senate and the Electoral Tribunal to determine the eligibility of the candidates, following what is established by the reform that requires probity in individuals aspiring to judicial positions.
Finally, María Emilia Molina, circuit magistrate and president of the Mexican Association of Women Judges, rejected the claims of the Senate president, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, regarding the detection of candidates for judicial elections who have defended drug traffickers. Molina questioned the lack of thorough evaluation of the candidacies by the Senate and emphasized the importance of ensuring the suitability of the candidates to strengthen the integrity of the judicial system in Mexico.
