The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to Ernesto Zedillo's criticisms regarding the judicial reform, stating that he cannot speak about corruption, as during his administration the controversial Bank Savings Protection Fund (Fobaproa) was created, for which the Mexican state is still paying the consequences. Sheinbaum questioned the amount of money that Mexicans continue to disburse due to this bank rescue. She also announced that she will request the Bank of Mexico to investigate the lifetime pension that Zedillo receives.
In a conference from the National Palace, Sheinbaum emphasized that Banxico can investigate the monthly pension of 143 thousand pesos that Ernesto Zedillo receives, since he worked for a company that he himself benefited during his presidential term. The head of government of Mexico City expressed her intention to reveal alleged irregularities related to Fobaproa during Zedillo's government.
For his part, Ernesto Zedillo responded to Sheinbaum's statements, accusing her of reacting with insults instead of arguments. Through a letter, Zedillo compared the actions of the president to those of his successor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whom he accused of spreading falsehoods for years to deceive the population. In his article about the judicial power reform, Zedillo argues that the proposed modifications do not strengthen the state's ability to administer justice, which generated controversy in the political sphere.
Sheinbaum recalled a situation during Zedillo's government where information about the devaluation of the peso was leaked before it occurred, raising questions about possible undue influences in economic decisions at that time. The tension between both politicians continues to escalate, and it is expected that the discussion about the judicial reform and the former president's past management will remain in the media spotlight.
