The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to Pedro Sola, the host of the entertainment show Ventaneando, after he stated that only those who pay taxes should have the right to vote. Sheinbaum mentioned that there is a lot of ignorance, racism, and classism in society, and criticized the hypocrisy present in certain discourses. She emphasized the importance of freedom of expression and the need to comply with the law.
Pedro Sola is known for his work as a host on Ventaneando, but few know that he studied Economics at the National Economics School of UNAM in the 1960s. In an interview, Sola mentioned that he initially wanted to study dramatic arts but ultimately chose Economics because he considered it an easy career that would allow him to do theater in his free time. During his time at UNAM, Sola coincided with political figures such as Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Manuel Camacho Solís, and José Francisco Ruiz Massieu. According to him, these individuals had a pact that one of them would become president, and that pact was fulfilled by Salinas. Sola's thesis, with which he graduated, is titled "Comparative Analysis of the Value Systems of Goods in International Trade."
Regarding his viewpoint on social programs and the situation in the country, Pedro Sola has expressed criticism towards social benefits and the supposed promotion of laziness in Mexico. In his opinion, those who do not work are rewarded, and money is given to the "ninis". The host considers it sensible that only people who pay taxes should have the right to vote, which generated a reaction from Claudia Sheinbaum.
In response to Sola's comments, President Sheinbaum stated that all Mexican citizens pay taxes when purchasing products, such as VAT, and classified the host's statements as ignorant. She emphasized that it is fundamental to respect the diversity of opinions and guarantee freedom of expression, but also underlined the importance of complying with the law.
