After the first rumors about the possible request of Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in search of Spanish nationality, photos have now leaked on social media of her visit to the diplomatic mission. The photos were published on the afternoon of Friday, May 2, increasing the controversy over the political tension between Mexico and Spain.
Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of the former president, went to the Embassy of Spain in Mexico on April 29 to begin the process of requesting Spanish nationality, according to diplomatic sources. Although there is no official statement, the news has generated mixed reactions on social media and in international media.
Now, the account on X named 'vampipe' leaked some photos of Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, accompanied by other women, in the facilities of the Embassy of Spain. Although this could confirm her request, users in the comments asked if it is the exact place or if the application will advance.
"They said that Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller went to process her Spanish nationality... The 4T fans replied that it couldn't be true... Well, what do you think? There are photos..." - @vampipe
The possible acquisition of this nationality revives tensions between Mexico and Spain, which arose during López Obrador's government, when in 2019 he sent a letter to King Felipe VI demanding apologies for the abuses committed during the Conquest. This letter was supposedly drafted by Gutiérrez Müller (according to ABC correspondent David Alandete) and sought to anticipate commemorative acts leading up to 2021.
In the same way, journalist Dolia Estévez recalled that to obtain Spanish nationality by option, it is necessary to swear allegiance to the king and obey the Constitution, which has generated debate about the symbolism of the act in contrast to the request for a 'historical pardon' from the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
So far, neither Gutiérrez Müller nor Mexican authorities have issued public statements about this process.
