Controversy Over Beatriz Gutiérrez Muller's Nationality Request

Beatriz Gutiérrez Muller, wife of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has requested Spanish nationality at the Embassy of Spain in Mexico. The appointment took place last Tuesday, April 29, generating a stir due to the historic apology she made in the past to Spain on behalf of Mexico.

In 2019, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller wrote the letter in which a historic apology was requested from Spain for the abuses committed during the Conquest of Mexico. This request was supported by President López Obrador, marking a moment of tension between both countries.

The controversy intensified with Gutiérrez Muller's visit to the Embassy of Spain with the possible intention of obtaining Spanish nationality. Netizens recalled the apology request she had pushed for, which sparked debate on social media and among the specialized press.

In this context, it is emphasized that, according to the official requirements of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to acquire Spanish nationality by option, it is necessary to swear allegiance to the King and obedience to the Constitution and Spanish laws. If nationality is granted, Beatriz Gutiérrez Muller would find herself in the situation of having to swear loyalty to the King to whom, in the past, she requested an apology on behalf of Mexico.
