The local Congress of Nuevo León has made progress in the creation of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Matters, with the objective of reducing the governor's influence in this sensitive issue and establishing a communication channel with industrial sectors to address a complex problem.
Unlike other agencies such as the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Femicide, in this case, the jurisdiction will completely fall under the Prosecutor's Office headed by Javier Flores, with no possibility of intervention by the Executive. It is expected that the creation of this prosecutor's office will take place in less than a month, which has generated uncertainty among experts in the field.
This ruling has been promoted by the PRI and the Green Party, while both the PRI and PAN will influence the management of this agency through the state Attorney General's Office. The creation of this prosecutor's office is particularly relevant given the series of conflicts existing between the state government and various companies regarding environmental issues.
The opposition considers it essential to have a tool that allows them to intervene in environmental matters and in decisions affecting the business sector, just as state authorities do through the Ministry of Environment or Profepa. This movement comes after the controversial appointment of Carlos Mendoza in the Judiciary, which generated tension between the opposition and the governor's allied party.
Despite the fact that the candidate backed by the governor was ultimately appointed to the Judiciary, it was observed that the opposition avoided contact with him, including photos and greetings during the appointment ceremony. Even the President of Congress chose to be absent during that event, thus showing her discontent with the situation.
