During the afternoon of Friday, May 2, photos were published suggesting that Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller had processed her Spanish citizenship at the Spanish Embassy in Mexico. Following this alleged request, political tension between Mexico and Spain was reignited, a conflict that began in 2019.
In a letter attributed to Gutiérrez Müller, the Spanish state was demanded to apologize for the crimes committed during the Conquest, as a way to commemorate the 500 years since the fall of Tenochtitlán. The request for forgiveness triggered diplomatic tensions between the two countries, recalling the letter that the Mexican president sent in 2019 to King Felipe VI with a similar request.
The letter proposed working on a joint ceremony in 2021 for Spain to officially recognize the grievances caused during the Conquest. This situation generated a stir on social media and unleashed criticism.
It was reported that Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller visited the Spanish Embassy in Mexico on April 29 to make the application for Spanish citizenship, although there is no official confirmation regarding this. This action has caused controversy online, particularly due to the need to pledge loyalty to the king of Spain as part of the requirements.
Recently, photos of Gutiérrez Müller, accompanied by other women, at the embassy facilities were shared on social media, further intensifying the controversy surrounding this issue.
