Zedillo Criticizes Sheinbaum's Democratic Intentions

Former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo intensifies his critique of Claudia Sheinbaum, claiming her administration threatens democracy. Zedillo urges transparency in political intentions, amidst ongoing tensions.

The former president of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, has intensified criticisms against Claudia Sheinbaum, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the political movement Morena, accusing them of contributing to the 'destruction' of democracy in the country. Zedillo made these statements during an interview with journalist León Krauze on the podcast 'Ciberdiálogos.'

In the interview, Zedillo pointed out that Sheinbaum was elected to govern for the benefit of all Mexicans, not to continue the political thinking of her predecessor. He acknowledged Sheinbaum's democratic victory in the elections last June, where she obtained nearly 60% of the votes. Zedillo emphasized the importance of clarifying the real intentions behind political actions: 'Let them come out and say it clearly: 'No, look, we have concluded that Mexico is not suitable for a democratic system.'"

The conflict between Zedillo and Sheinbaum began after the former president criticized the judicial reform promoted by López Obrador in an essay for the magazine 'Letras Libres,' calling it a threat to Mexican democracy. Zedillo urged Sheinbaum to be clear and honest about her intentions with the country's democratic system and not to deceive the population.

Zedillo asserted that the 4T movement, led by Sheinbaum and López Obrador, seeks to transform Mexican democracy into a dictatorship. He emphasized that the role of a president is not to be popular, but to serve the nation democratically. Furthermore, he criticized the candidate selection process for the judicial election, stating that their capacities and professional integrity were not properly evaluated.

In response to Zedillo's criticisms, Sheinbaum questioned his moral authority, pointing out his participation in the bank rescue during his term. She requested the Bank of Mexico detailed information about Zedillo's lifetime pension. Zedillo accepted the review of his pension and the bank rescue process but called for an independent audit of López Obrador's projects such as the Maya Train and the Dos Bocas refinery.

Finally, Zedillo expressed concern about Sheinbaum's statements, who has expressed her intention to build the 'second floor of the Fourth Transformation.' He emphasized that she was elected to be president of a democratic nation, representing both those who share her ideas and those who do not.
