This Wednesday, an important meeting was held at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), where the former President of the Government of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, met with the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and also present were the Ambassador of Spain to Mexico, Juan Duarte, and the Mexican Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, María Teresa Mercado.
The main reason for Zapatero's visit to Mexico was his participation in academic activities, highlighting his role as one of the founders of the Puebla Group, according to information from the Mexican Foreign Ministry. This approach between Zapatero and the Mexican government occurs after some diplomatic disagreements between Spain and Mexico.
During the meeting, relevant topics arose, such as President Claudia Sheinbaum's decision not to invite King Felipe VI to her inauguration, arguing that he did not apologize for the Conquest. Both figures exchanged views on the global geopolitical situation and the current challenges facing both Latin America and Europe.
In a statement issued by the SRE, it was emphasized that issues regarding the global geopolitical context and the challenges facing the international community, both in Europe and in Latin America and the Caribbean, were discussed. It is important to note that the then Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, had "paused" diplomatic relations with Spain in 2022, citing a lack of "an attitude of respect" from the monarchy. Despite the controversy, the current Mexican Secretary recently clarified that relations "continue" between both countries.
