Mexico Thwarts Iran-Plotted Attack on Israeli Ambassador

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement on Friday that Mexican security services prevented a criminal network from plotting an attack against the Israeli ambassador to Mexico. The operation, according to the statement, was directed by Iran.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Foreign Ministry thanked Mexican security services for dismantling “a terrorist network directed by Iran” that intended to attack the Israeli ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Neiger.

The alleged assassination attempt was thwarted in Mexico this summer, according to the U.S. news outlet Axios, which also detailed that the plan to carry out the crime would have been set in motion by the end of 2024.

In statements cited by the same outlet, U.S. officials claim that this alleged plot to kill the Israeli ambassador is further proof of “the extensive network” with which Iran operates abroad against “American and Israeli targets,” in this case in Latin America.

According to information from Axios, the operation is believed to have been led by a unit of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which for years has recruited agents throughout Latin America “from the Iranian embassy in Venezuela.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that its security and intelligence agencies “will continue to work tirelessly” in cooperation with other agencies worldwide “to thwart the terrorist threats of Iran and its allies against Israeli and Jewish targets."
