Recent statements by Luisa María Alcalde regarding the alleged lack of youth at the Generation Z march this Sunday are actually related to a demand that has been made to the MORENA leader for several months at the National Palace: the ruling party is struggling to attract young voters. Following observations from the presidential circle, the issue did not receive much focus, prompting the leader to quickly point out that there were no young people at the opposition rally. However, this issue is now on the agenda of the leadership and extends beyond the march. Various surveys reaching the presidential office indicate that the segment where the government has the most difficulty gaining support is among men under 30 in urban centers. The government believes there is an opportunity because this electorate is not entirely committed to opposition options either. Sheinbaum: "The Fourth Transformation will not be stopped, even if they align with the international right." In this way, MORENA is facing the same problem as other left-wing parties in the region, where the youth vote tends to lean toward right-wing options. Concerns about the youth vote have long been present in Claudia Sheinbaum's team, specifically since the 2021 midterm election, when then-Head of Government of Mexico City lost half of the mayoralties. Prior to that contest, the administration had considered lowering the voting age, but after the electoral setback, the idea of allowing 15-year-olds to vote was scrapped. For the 2024 presidential election, the prevailing calculation in the National Palace is that about 50% of the total youth electorate voted for MORENA, while only 25% voted for the opposition. However, in recent months, the natural erosion of governing has had a greater impact on this age group, leading to demands on MORENA's leadership.
