Mexico's President Asks for Clarification on Miss Universe Brand Owner's Case

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on the Attorney General's Office to clarify if there is an investigation against Miss Universe brand owner Raúl Rocha Cantú, accused of smuggling. She stressed this should not tarnish the victory of Mexican contestant Fátima Bosch.

Mexico's President Asks for Clarification on Miss Universe Brand Owner's Case

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated on Wednesday that the Attorney General's Office (FGR) must clarify whether there is an investigation or an arrest warrant against Raúl Rocha Cantú, the owner of the Miss Universe brand, following a news report on the matter.

“If there is an investigation against this person, then the Attorney General's Office must inform about it,” the head of state said during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum's reaction came after the newspaper Reforma published on Wednesday that Rocha Cantú, owner of the Miss Universe pageant, had been implicated by the FGR for his alleged involvement in drug, weapon, and fuel trafficking between Guatemala and Mexico.

According to the newspaper, the Attorney General's Office considers Rocha Cantú to be one of the leaders of a criminal organization dedicated to fuel smuggling that crosses in boats on the Usumacinta River and is transported in tankers from Chiapas and Tabasco to Querétaro.

Since 2022, Rocha has been the honorary consul of Guatemala in Mexico.

Separation between the pageant and the legal process

Sheinbaum emphasized that the possible legal process against Rocha Cantú should not be mixed with the recent participation of Fátima Bosch, the Mexican representative who won the Miss Universe 2025 title on November 21, because, she assured, an attempt has been made to link both topics to diminish the performance of the young woman.

“Now that is independent of the young woman who won the pageant, because they want to join them. But then they want to take away her merit,” she stated.

The president highlighted that, beyond the divided opinions on beauty pageants, it is necessary to recognize the achievement of the Mexican contestant.

“I repeat, beyond whether we agree with these pageants or not (we must give) merit to whoever has it, in the pageant,” she pointed out.

However, she insisted that the matter related to the businessman must be clarified by the relevant authorities.

“Now, a very different thing is this issue of this person, and there, if there is an investigation, then let it be said that there is an investigation and that the Attorney General's Office informs,” she maintained.

Sheinbaum did not refer to the content of the alleged investigation, but reiterated that it corresponds exclusively to the Attorney General's Office to confirm or deny the journalistic versions.

“It is different, isn't it?”
