Sheinbaum Confirms Meeting with Trump to Discuss USMCA

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that she will meet with US President Donald Trump tomorrow. This meeting comes against the backdrop of Trump's statements about potentially terminating the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

"Afterwards, we are going to have a meeting with Mexicans and Mexican women there," Sheinbaum commented. She detailed that despite the brief nature of the meeting, she will seek to clarify the situation regarding the USMCA following Trump's declarations that the treaty would end.

"It seems we are going to have a small meeting, small because it's short time, with President Trump and another with Prime Minister Carrey," she assured. She stated that both the meetings and the sporting event would be brief.

"However, a meeting of just a few minutes is expected due to the presence of both at the FIFA event," she added. "It's a good moment, the FIFA World Cup draw, to talk about the USMCA... the three of us being together is a symbol of friendship, a sporting stage of peace, unity, and also to meet President Trump in person. The event itself lasts about four minutes."

"Regarding the treaty, we three need to be together. Separating this integration would affect the region a lot," she added.

On the issue of interference by US authorities in other Central and South American countries and the possibility of replicating it in Mexico, she responded: "He knows our position, not only because we make it public. We believe that international laws, the sovereignty and autonomy of peoples must be respected. I have always told him that Mexico will go for peaceful construction, and if there is an option, we will reiterate it."

This news outlet had previously reported that in Sheinbaum Pardo's circle, it is not considered prudent for her to appear before Trump after a very contentious week that saw the departure of Alejandro Gertz from the Attorney General's Office and the reappearance of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"We have pending the commercial issue... he said the treaty ends, but it doesn't end, it's a review. Mexico has one of its best economic agreements... the idea is to talk a bit about this, but the objective is to see where we continue working," said Sheinbaum Pardo. Sheinbaum countered that it would be a review and not a negotiation.

"We are leaving tonight, we will use a plane from the National Defense. Despite the indecision at the beginning of the week regarding her participation in the FIFA World Cup Draw in Washington, and even more so a meeting with President Donald Trump, President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed both events for tomorrow. She announced that she will go to the John F. Kennedy Center for the FIFA event, where she will hold a meeting with Trump and also with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. We have a meeting this afternoon, we are sleeping in Washington, we are going in the morning to the Kennedy Center."
