Veracruz Congress Approves Attorney General's Resignation

The Congress of Veracruz approved on Monday, in a public session, the resignation of Verónica Hernández Giadáns as the State Attorney General, to conclude her nine-year appointment prematurely, which came into force on May 28, 2020. The resignation request was read to the plenary session by the secretary of the Board of Directors, Deputy Alejandro Porras David. During the session, the letter sent by Hernández Giadáns was made public, in which she argued that her resignation is due to the recent constitutional reform that modified the procedure for appointing the head of the State Attorney General's Office. In the document, she expressed that she shares the objectives of the reform, which grants the governor, Rocío Nahle, the power to appoint and remove the person in charge of the body. "I agree with the goodness of the reform in addition to contributing to increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the institution," she stated in the text read before the legislators. Hernández Giadáns recalled that she joined the Attorney General's Office in September 2019 as acting head, after the legislative majority determined the removal of then-Attorney General Jorge Winckler. In her letter, she referred to the changes implemented during her tenure, the coordination with federal institutions, and the participation of the administrative and operational staff of the Attorney General's Office. She also highlighted projects in the areas of forensics and infrastructure, as well as the regularization of workers' salaries.

She pointed out that the Attorney General's Office "has made victims a priority" and affirmed that efforts were made to reverse historical deficiencies in resources and organization. She added that, in her opinion, during these years, progress has been made in consolidating a more professional body with better conditions for crime investigation. Upon presenting her resignation, she indicated that she will remain attentive to the handover-reception process when the Congress and the Executive determine the person who will hold the position. The reading of her message closed with a thank you to the Legislature for having appointed her as the first woman to lead the institution. At the end of the session, deputies concluded the process, noting that the resignation was accepted with 42 votes in favor and 5 against. In the same session, the deputies approved the separation of Lisbeth Aurelia Jiménez Aguirre from her position as a magistrate of the High Court of Justice of the Judicial Branch for one year starting from December 8, 2025. It has been unofficially mentioned that the magistrate could occupy the position of Attorney General after the required legislative process.
