Senator Colosio Considers Sonora Governorship Bid

Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio is considering a run for governor of Sonora in 2027, viewing it as a path to strengthen his national position for a potential 2030 presidential campaign.

Senator Colosio Considers Sonora Governorship Bid

Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio has not ruled out a run for governor of Sonora in 2027. One reason is that the current governor prefers to bet on other succession options, and the other is that the alliance between PAN (National Action Party) and MC (Citizen's Movement) is not entirely off the table in the state palace. Over this vehicle, Colosio, in tune with Dante Delgado, now has his doubts. Sonora, on the other hand, offers Colosio the possibility of an electoral victory that could later position him on the national stage, especially because governance there appears more feasible than in Nuevo León. The 2027 election in the state will be for a three-year gubernatorial term, which would be more functional for his potential 2030 presidential project. Colosio has a nearly familial relationship with Governor Alfonso Durazo, who is going through a delicate moment with his succession options within the MORENA party. The senator's chances would also grow exponentially if he could reach some kind of agreement with the mayor of Hermosillo, Antonio Astiazarán, a PAN figure and a strong candidate for governor from an opposition front. Another advantage for Colosio in Sonora is that he has never governed or administered anything there, so he would arrive as a novel option, which is the opposite of what happens in Nuevo León, where he is criticized for his management in Monterrey, which later led to his defeat in the Senate race. In Nuevo León, the senator currently faces two political obstacles. According to sources in his inner circle, the option is not only on the table but, in February, the legislator expects to commission a poll that will provide clarity on the situation in the northwestern state. In this way, a possibility that emerged as a mechanism of pressure against Governor Samuel García—who was not yielding positions to the senator at the end of the summer—is beginning to be viewed through the lens of reality. This year, polls have already emerged that assign Colosio a strong position in the MORENA-governed state.
